The course runs eight to 10 hours, and includes classroom and range time.
Obama spoke on Wednesday, and urged congress to pass certain gun control measures, including a new assault weapons ban and weapon magazine capacity restrictions.
McElwee and Sandlin proposed similar measures last year.
The course is for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students will be taught the NRA's three rules for safe gun handling, primary causes of firearm accidents, how to unload certain action types and the benefits of becoming active in shooting sports.
Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; rifle parts and operation; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting prone, sitting, standing, and kneeling; and cleaning.
