During the scheme, Mata and his friend, Robert Gregory Bruce, caused UMC to pay nearly $55,000 to the fake company for services that were not provided. Mata used these funds for personal living expenses, educational expenses, and travel and entertainment expenses.
Bruce has been ordered to report to a federal prison in Seagoville, Texas by October 25th. He will also pay more than $737,000 in restitution.
Mata pleaded guilty to mail fraud in a case related to the conviction of former University Medical Center Vice President Greg Bruce.
Prosecutors say that Bruce, who was UMC’s vice president of corporate services, sent the hospital an invoice for just over $9,700 from fake company B.R. Media Monitoring.
Greg Bruce resigned after an audit revealed possible employee embezzlement. The FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office are investigating.
