Lubbock Christian University and Hospice of Lubbock have officially dedicated a park memorializing children that have died.

The South Plains Children's Memorial Park is located west of Lubbock Christian University’s Behavioral Sciences Building on Dover Avenue on the northeast side of the campus.

A press release states that the park is a site for families from the South Plains to come together in memory of their lost children.

“Though the park is located on the Lubbock Christian University campus, it is intended to be a quite place for families in the entire Lubbock community, regardless of denomination or cultural background,” the press release continued.

At the entrance of the park, there is a gate and a quote by C.S. Lewis engraved in stone. Inside the memorial, visitors can take a looped meditation walk and view the rocks engraved with children’s names along the path.

Future plans for the park include a brick walkway, swings to sit in, and a bronze statue of a child.

Compassionate Friends of Lubbock, an organization that supports families after the death of their child, meet in the Behavioral Sciences Building on the LCU campus monthly.

Families who have lost a child can purchase a rock to be placed in the garden. Ten rocks have been purchased in honor of children so far.

The park is open to the public.
