The closing of a South Plains meat packing plant might benefit a South Dakota slaughterhouse.

Northern Beef Packers in Aberdeen, South Dakota has sent recruiters to Plainview to interview employees of the Cargill Beef plant slated to close on February 1 at the close of business.

A spokeswoman for Northern Beef tells Aberdeennews.com they are seeking to hire 150 employees.

Northern Beef has struggled to fill out their workforce partly due to the low unemployment rate in South Dakota and the number of people not seeking work.

The Plainview plant processed 4,650 head of cattle each day and one was of the larger plants in the Minnesota based company.

Northern Beef will process 1,500 head of cattle at their plant in Aberdeen from the states of North and South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota.
