Lubbock police officers responded to a single vehicle accident Sunday morning (Aug. 27) that resulted in the death of a passenger.

At around 4:35 a.m., officers arrived at 1920 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in response to a single vehicle crash.

According to police, the vehicle was traveling south on MLK when it lost control after crossing Idalou Road. The vehicle then entered the center median, struck two light poles and a tree before coming to a stop.

The passenger, 23-year-old Charles Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 30-year-old Michael Hastings, was taken to UMC with serious injuries.
