State Rep. Jason Villalba is under fire for a bill he filed that would prohibit citizens from filming police, unless you are traditional media, within 25 feet or 100 feet if you have a firearm. The Washington Times reported that Villalba has taken heat from social media as well as other publications.

Texas already makes it a crime if someone “interrupts, disrupts, impedes, or otherwise interferes with a peace officer while the peace officer is performing a duty or exercising authority imposed or granted by law.”

Others pointed out that in 2011, an appeals court in Glik v. Cunniffe ruled unanimously that private citizens are allowed to record police.

“First Circuit court in the Glik decision didn’t believe 10 ft. was too close for filming,” tweeted Justin L. Oliver.
