Last Friday Mayor Tom Martin appeared on Lubbock's First News to discuss the budget process and how the council might move forward. There are some on the council that want to raise taxes in order to pay for the basic needs. The Mayor disagrees with raising taxes and believes they can meet the needs of the city without raising the tax rate. The Mayor listed three needs that he felt must be included in the budget. More police and firefighters and at least a three percent raise across the board for all city employees.

Many of our listeners questioned the last need. Sure, some and maybe even most city employees probably deserve a raise, but does everyone? Many businesses in Texas and across the U.S. haven't given raises in a long time due to the economy. So is now really the time to give out raises in the first place?

What do you think?
