Friday on The Chad Hasty Show, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) joined the show to talk about the SHIELD Act that he has introduced, which he says will aid in deterring terrorists being able to legally purchase weapons.

Sen. Cornyn answered questions from Hasty and addressed concerns that the SHIELD (Securing Our Homeland from Radical Islamists and Enhancing Law Enforcement Detection) Act will not prevent law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights.

Among the questions Hasty asked was whether or not the Orlando terrorist Omar Mateen would have been prevented by this act from legally purchasing his weapons, as well as who exactly would be in charge of maintaining the list of prohibited purchasers.

Sen. Cornyn said:

Former Senator Teddy Kennedy was on the "No Fly List" at one point, because they confused him with an Irish Republican Army, an IRA terrorist. So that's why it's so important that we don't have secret lists that deny people their constitutional rights. It requires the government to come forward and to prove in a court of law that there is probable cause, and it will also, we also need to make sure that the FBI and others are notified so they can escalate their investigation if it's warranted. This presumption of guilt and of secret lists and denying people their Constitutional rights is really un-American.
