The odds of both an earthquake and a hurricane hitting the East Coast within a few days of each other is pretty incredible. And it seems that some presidential hopefuls see it as something more than just a coincidence of nature.

GOP candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann claimed that both Hurricane Irene and the earthquake that hit the East Coast were messages from God at a campaign stop in Florida last weekend:

Washington D.C, you'd think by now they'd get the message. An earthquake...a hurricane...are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it.

A spokesperson for the campaign insisted that Bachmann's comment was "in jest," but of course, that hasn't stopped people from getting mad and calling the joke disrespectful and "morally reprehensible." After viewing the video myself I have to say that, yes,  she was just kidding around. Sure the joke may not have been in the best taste, but these days the media will jump all over any kind of slip-up the GOP makes, so they're reaction is completely understandable. Totally off base, but understandable.
