The next phase of Proposition 1 projects were approved this week by the Texas Transportation Commission to renovate, expand and improve state highways in 23 projects.

Twenty three of 200 planned projects will be implemented in the second phase of Proposition 1, which was approved by voters last November. The projects have been allocated more than $167 million. The phase will repair 800 miles of highway, build 659 miles of new highway lanes, including 159 miles of passing lanes for rural highways, and improve or replace 114 bridges.

In West Texas, Midland County has been allocated more than $18 million for repairs to I-20. The two projects have two bidders each, with the low bid being 33 percent and 17 percent over the estimate, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

I-40 in Randall County is slated to see more than $18 million for repairs and improvements.

TxDOT said Proposition 1 is not just about alleviating traffic congestion. They reported 248 fatalities along the corridors receiving improvement over the last five years.
