All nine members of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles board today voted against proposed license plates to honor the Confederate States of America.

If approved, the specialty license plates would have been allowed for use on Texas motor vehicles like other specialty license plates honoring Texas colleges and universities and professional sports teams.

Texas Governor Rick Perry, in past discussions about the proposed license plates, defended the historical value of the Confederacy.  However, recently he changed his tune, stating last month, "we don't need to be opening old wounds".

Various organizations, including the NAACP have opposed the use of the Confederacy battle flag saying its a racist relic.

Nine other southern states have approved similar license plates honoring the Confederate States of America.
