POTOSI, Texas (AP) — A church in a small West Texas community has burned to the ground.

Capt. David Spraberry of the volunteer fire department for the community of Potosi says that when their crews arrived at the Potosi Methodist Church on Saturday evening, the building was engulfed in flames.

He tells the Abilene Reporter-News that their focus soon shifted to containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to a Baptist church about 50 yards away.

Spraberry says cause of the fire is being investigated.

Verna Rathmell, who grew up in Potosi Methodist, says, "It is very sad to see this old building lost."

She said her grandfather helped build the church nearly 100 years ago.
