On Tuesday, September 22, Lubbock Police Chief Greg Stevens released a statement pertaining to an ongoing investigation into the death of a person that was previously being held in police custody.

A Lubbock Police Department patrol unit responded to a public dispute and detained a man before releasing him pending arrest when he complained of stomach pains. An ambulance was called to the scene where the individual was reportedly tested for drugs and then taken to University Medical Center.

The man, whom has not been identified, died yesterday at the hospital.

"We're working it as a death investigation. No one has been put on any sort of paid or unpaid administrative leave," said police chief Greg Stevens. "Our officers arrested the man and released him to the hospital with charges pending. He was in the hospital and passed away."
