No doubt you've seen the pistachio commercials aimed at your funny bone, but there are more benefits than a good belly laugh, by incorporating pistachios into your daily life.

We talked with Robin Hawkins with United Supermarkets about the importance of 'going 'green' for 2016, which means getting more green into your gut to improve your overall health. January is National Green Month and she's got great ways to get there and pistachios are a delicious way.

United's 'Build A Better Basket' campaign continues for 2016 with the emphasis being to 'Color Your Basket', by incorporating lots of color into your body and life.

Pistachios, although delicious, have gotten a bad rap for the fact that they're kinda hard to open.  Hence the jokes and commercials focusing on this fact.

The great thing is you can now get them already shelled. Or as Robin says, 'Make it a process and enjoy each step'. They are delicious on salads, crushed up as a coating for fish and chicken, in lieu of bready coatings, or just as a snack. I've also put them in my food processor and made pistachio butter, which is delicious and natural.  Plus it's a good alternative if you get tired of almond butter.

So many of us living a low carb lifestyle and pistachios fall right into the category whether you go 'Paleo' or some other form of low carbohydrate eating plan.

Pistachios are packed with fiber, antioxidants and Robin also said that a whopping 50 nuts is one serving!

So feel free to 'go nuts' this year with pistachios!
