New K-12 math curriculum standards for the state have been approved by the State Board of Education. Members approved the requirements unanimously despite much outside debate that they are sub-par in comparison with the rest of the nation.

The Texas Association of Business was among those that opposed the new math curriculum, arguing that they don't place enough focus on basics like algebra. Texas is one of five states in the country that have not adopted math and language arts standards matching the national requirements.

K-8th grade requirements will take effect in 2014, with new high school standards following in 2015.
