'Sanctuary Cities' are back in the news, most recently involving the recent murder in San Francisco of Kathryn Steinle, a 32 year old woman. The killing was allegedly committed by Francisco Sanchez, an illegal immigrant and convicted felon who had previously been deported five times for numerous crimes in Texas, Oregon and Arizona.

The situation brings back to light a recent high-profile controversy between Lubbock city Councilman Victor Hernandez and Texas State Senator Charles Perry, in which Hernandez called Perry a bigot and a racist for proposing SB 185, legislation which would have prohibited local governments from failing to enforce immigration law. The controversy continued for quite some time, with a large amount of local news, as well as Facebook posts by Hernandez.

Chad Hasty offered his thoughts on the subject on his program on April 21, 2015.

SB 185 was killed during the last Texas legislative session. Though there is no legal definition for the term, more information on 'Sanctuary Cities' may be found here, as well as a partial list of 'Sanctuary Cities' in Texas here.
