Lubbock Police warn of a phone scam targeting the elderly.

An elderly man began receiving phone calls from Montreal, Quebec on Thursday, August 26th.

The first call was from an unknown suspect claiming to be his grandson, saying that he had been arrested in Canada, and needed his grandfather to wire money to get out of jail. The call ended with the person asking the elderly man not to tell the grandson’s parents he was arrested.

Over the next few days, the elderly man received phone calls from others claiming to be a police officer and an attorney, both requesting thousands of dollars.

Before the man contacted the parents of his grandson and discovered that it was a scam, he had already wired several thousand dollars to Canada.

Lubbock Police say that the scam is quickly increasing in popularity across Texas.

Most of the suspects operate from other countries, making it difficult to recover the money.
