Lubbock Officer Shoots Suspect During Foot Chase

A man is dead after he drew a firearm at a Lubbock police officer.
The incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday behind the Wash & Dry laundry at 49th Street and Avenue Q.
Police noticed suspicious activity and approached two men. 27 year-old Julian Begay ran from Officer Curtis Fish. Fish attempted to taze Begay unsuccessfully, and during the chase, Begay pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer, prompting Fish to shoot Begay.
Begay was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The other man, 22-year-old Carlos Guevarra, was arrested for an outstanding traffic warrant.
An investigation is ongoing, but the Lubbock Police Department says that the officer acted properly in the situation.
