Lubbock has been named amongst the top communities for younger people.

America’s Promise Alliance and ING financial services have named the Hub City as one of the nation’s 100 Best Communities for Young People.

The YWCA of Lubbock submitted the application for the competition. The journey toward this particular honor began when the local YWCA was awarded a five-year state grant known as the Texas Healthy Adolescent Initiative in 2009.

The competition recognizes communities across the country that focus on reducing high school dropout rates and providing services and support to their youth.

All communities submitting an application were required to provide details on how their existing initiatives and programs helped to deliver the “Five Promises”, resources which the Alliance deems necessary to healthy development. Those include: caring adults, safe places, healthy start, effective education, and opportunities to help others.

More than 300 communities from the United States and Puerto Rico were nominated, and winners were chosen by a 20-person panel of distinguished judges.

YWCA Lubbock executive director Glenda Mathis said “This award is a tribute to the many strengths of our community, and it encourages us to continue to work and keep our community strong for our youth and families.”
