Police were called to a deadly crash north of Tahoka at around 3:30 a.m. Monday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a pickup truck had lost control on Highway 87. The driver, 29-year-old Brian Keith Smith of Lubbock, was pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS also said that it was raining when cattle got out of a field and were on the highway. A semi struck several of the cattle and killed them.

Smith attempted evasion action to avoid a dead cow in the roadway, but he lost control and went into the center median causing the pickup to roll.

DPS said there was another crash when a vehicle struck one of the dead cattle, but no people were injured in that crash.
