Lubbock residents know we live in a very windy city. But how windy is it?

According to The Weather Channel, Lubbock is the third-windiest city in America, with an average wind speed of 12.4 mph. The most common wind direction in the Hub City is from the south, April is the windiest month and the city's record peak gust happened May 9, 1952 at measured at 90 mph, says the network.

The F5 tornado that touched down in Lubbock on May 11, 1970 registered the strongest winds in the city's history: 88.6 mph.

The Weather Channel arrived at its top 10 list of windiest cities in the U.S. by "using average annual wind speed data from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center." The data focused on cities with populations of 100,000 or more with the most persistent wind.

Other Texas cities also made the list.

Abilene earned the no. 9 spot with an average wind speed of 11.9 mph; Corpus Christi came in at no. 8 with an average wind speed of 12 mph; and Amarillo topped the list with an average wind speed of 13.6 mph.
