Some grade levels at Lubbock ISD will no longer be able to go out for lunch.

Tenth grade students at all LISD high school campuses will have a closed lunch period, along with the ninth graders.

Freshman students have had a closed lunch period for several years, but renovations will be made to LISD high school cafeterias with funds from the 2010 bond election to accommodate the sophomores as well.

The citizen-led 2020 Committee recommended the closed lunch, citing safety and security concerns. The district says that student absenteeism increases after lunch as well.

LISD says that the renovated cafeteria spaces will be similar to a shopping mall food court, and will include spaces for study groups to assemble during the lunch period.
