A Lubbock High School senior has been awarded a scholarship for his academic prowess.

Gabriel Nathan has received a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, after being selected from a group of more than 15,000 National Merit Finalists.

2,500 students nationwide have been selected to receive the scholarship, and Nathan is the only one from Lubbock ISD to receive the scholarship.

Nathan plans to attend the University of Chicago this fall, and wants to pursue a double major in Philosophy and Economics.

Lubbock High School Magnet Specialist and International Baccalaureate Coordinator Kay Moore discussed Nathan, saying “He is a very capable young man and his rigorous studies here at Lubbock High have prepared him well to embrace the opportunities at the University of Chicago.”

National Merit Scholarship winners are selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.
