As a former Lubbock High student in the 1990s, I enjoyed the longer Monday through Thursday schedule and the ability to go home at noon on Friday. Not to mention the fact that Friday’s ‘Fun’ courses were a way to learn in a fun, relaxed environment.

Well, as of the 2017-2018 that all ends, and Lubbock High School students can thank the Texas Education Agency for that.

Lubbock ISD Superintended Berhl Robertson made the announcement Tuesday in a letter to students and parents. I give Mr. Robertson credit. He tried to convince the TEA to give Lubbock High a waiver, but the TEA said 'no dice.'

Texas law requires 7-hour education days, and even though Lubbock High exceeded 7 hours Monday through Thursday, Friday was the sticking point.

So, Lubbock High School class of 2017 -- enjoy your half-day Friday, because the class of 2018 won’t.
