Trucks are almost a pre-requisite for moving to Texas drivers. And here on the South Plains, young truck owners often look for thrills due to the incredibly flat terrain. One Lubbock County road, dubbed by locals as "Rollercoaster Road," has some thrill-seeking drivers excited and many residents concerned.

Rollercoaster Road, or County Road 5800, in New Deal looks and drives like a rollercoaster, with its up and down whoop-dee-doos.

However fun it might look, the road is definitely dangerous. It's a one-lane dirt road with low areas often washing out or becoming so mud filled that vehicles often get stuck.

Nearby residents claim that some vehicles will often travel this dangerous stretch of road at speeds upwards of 90 miles per hour. A recent vehicle flip on the road trapped the occupants inside their truck, requiring rescue workers to free them.

To demonstrate how dangerous Rollercoaster Road, KLBK's TV crew traveled to the stretch of road to show what can happen (even in a pickup truck!) when driving down it at a high rate of speed.

In anticipation of my youngest son's ability to drive, last week I purchased a "tank" (see: a 2000 Ford F150 Extended Cab) for him to use during the learning phase. Almost immediately, he asked about its ability to handle some off-road action. Due to the accident on Rollercoaster Road, I now have something to show him when to advise against that type of driving.
