The case of two individuals who provided a minor with alcohol shortly before his death will be given to a special prosecutor at the request of Lubbock’s District Attorney. County District Attorney Matt Powell cited his reason for passing the case as conflicted interests.

Powell is a friend of Connor Mercer's family, something he says makes him unfit to judge the case. Two are charged with making alcohol available to 17-year-old Mercer, who was struck by a truck and killed late last year. He had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit for adults.
