The City of Lubbock’s council redistricting plan has been green-lighted by the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Justice has precleared the 2011 Redistricting plan approved by the Lubbock City Council earlier this year.

The Council chose to adopt “Model One” of the four possible choices for the redistricting plan, which increases the size of District 1 to almost 39,500 residents. It also cuts the amount of people living within District 5 from over 44,800 to around 38,200, and similar changes have been made in District 6.

The Department of Justice must clear each submitted redistricting plan to ensure that the “one person, one vote” standard is not violated. The maps must also not dilute racial representation or show signs of retrogression in minority-majority districts. There cannot be more than 10 percent deviation between the most heavily populated and the least populated district.
