Tonight, the Lubbock City Council is expected to discuss and vote upon a proposed ordinance that, if passed, would enact stricter anti-smoking and anti-tobacco laws in Lubbock.

Highlights of the proposed ordinance include the banning of all indoor smoking at bars and restaurants and outdoor smoking within 20 feet of a door, window or ventilation system.

However, the controversial ordinance is expected to fail at the dais. In the week before today's council meeting, Mayor Glen Roberton, council members Karen Gibson and Jeff Griffith lined up against the ordinance.  In separate interviews, Gibson and Griffith discussed on KFYO why they would be voting against the ordinance.

Then, Thursday afternoon after two o'clock, Councilman Jim Gerlt announced on Facebook he would not support the proposed ordinance.

"To those of you concerned about my vote on tonight's smoking ordinance, just let me say I have heard you and agree that the proposed ordinance is way, way over the top," Gerlt wrote on Facebook.

No word on if Gerlt is completely against stricter anti-smoking, anti-tobacco ordinances in Lubbock or just one the specifically proposed at Thursday's council meeting.

Tonight's Lubbock City Council meeting starts at 5:15p.
