The Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Council of Lubbock begins a series of events tonight marking the birthday of the civil rights leader. Tonight the Individuals of Distinction Award Banquet will be held at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

On Saturday evening, there will be a Youth Night Celebration at : 6:30 p.m. at the Dunbar College Preparatory Academy, 2010 E. 26th St.

On Sunday there will be a City Wide memorial service at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center which begins at 5:30pm.

The series of events conclude Monday evening with a Gospel Night program at 6:30 p.m., at the Greater St. James Baptist Church, 117 N. Mulberry Ave.

Last year marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I have a Dream” speech delivered on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
