A new group of young people will be chosen to represent Lubbock in Japan.

Applications are now being accepted by the City of Lubbock for the 2012 Junior Ambassador Goodwill Program. The City will select sixteen students in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades to study about Japan and its culture, and travel to Musashino, Japan, Lubbock’s sister city.

The students meet weekly to study and discuss the Japanese language, culture, and customs in preparation of the trip, which will take place over eight days in summer of 2012.

A press release from the City says that this program “will enrich the Ambassadors’ understanding of the social, political, and economic aspects of Japan and will increase their global competitiveness in the job market of the 21st Century.”

In order to apply, the students must provide an application, three reference letters, and a one-page essay on why they want to travel to Japan. The deadline to apply for this particular program is February 17th, 2012.

Applications are available at City Hall, middle and high schools, as well as online at http://jr-amb.ci.lubbock.tx.us/.
