You know how the saying goes: "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth," right? One judge in Utah decided to push that concept a bit further: a haircut for a haircut.

In Utah, a 13-year-old girl was sentenced to 30 days of detention and over 250 days of community service after she and a friend chopped off a 3-year-old's hair. However, the judge offered a deal to the teen's mother: he'll reduce her daughter's sentence, if the mother returns the favor and chops off her daughter's hair. Fair enough, right? Well...

The mother of a 13-year-old girl says she has filed a formal complaint against a juvenile court judge who told her he'd cut her daughter's sentence if she cut off the girl's ponytail in his courtroom.

"She definitely needed to be punished for what had happened," Valerie Bruno told the Deseret News. "But I never dreamt it would be that much of a punishment."

Bruno's daughter, Kaytlen Lopan, was referred to 7th District Juvenile Judge Scott Johansen's court in March for an allegation of assault. Lopan and a friend endeared themselves to a 3-year-old girl at McDonald's in Price and then used scissors to cut several inches of hair from the little girl's head, according to Price police.

Maybe I'm mistaken here, but I don't think it's the judge you need to take issue with. How about getting mad at your daughter, who pretty much assaulted a little 3-year-old girl? I applaud the judge for his creative bargain, and I think the mother ought to be grateful that the judge let her daughter get away with some community service and a haircut.
