A retiring U.S. Senator from Texas heard kind words from her counterpart Wednesday morning.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn said farewell to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who chose not to run for the seat again this year.

Cornyn said “Senator Hutchison has made history serving as the first woman to serve the great state of Texas in the United States Senate. Kay has always been a pioneer of sorts. As the father of two daughters, that means a lot to me.”

“So Kay, I join with my colleagues in saying to you, Vaya con Dios,” Cornyn continued.

The 69-year-old Republican senator was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1993, and has also served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives and as Texas State Treasurer.

Republican Ted Cruz has been elected to fill the seat currently occupied by Hutchison.
