Lubbock Mayor Pro Tem Jim Gerlt joined Tom Collins & Sondra Ziegler on Lubbock's First News Friday (July 10) to discuss highlights from Thursday evening's city council meeting.

The Lubbock City Council during Thursday's meeting approved a motion to postpone consideration of a contract with Golf Hub of Lubbock to operate a driving range inside McAlister Park.

Concerning the multi-story driving range which will include a restaurant and bar that will share a parking lot with Western Little League and Challenger Fields, Councilman Gerlt doesn't feel the restaurant and bar should be that close to the little league fields.

"If we approve this and a child gets run over, guess who gets the blame for it?" said Gerlt. "It's not the Western Little League, who supported the measure. No, it's the 'stupid council' who allowed a (driving) range to come in (to McAlister Park) selling liquor next to a little league."

Gerlt continued, "I also have a concern, is this the best use of public parks? Is this the best use of public land?"
