It's Time to Start Believing the Patrick Mahomes Heisman Hype

It's been fairly obvious since early 2015 that Patrick Mahomes is incredibly special.

In his opening act for his quest for the little bronze man, Mahomes threw for 483 yards and four touchdowns. He added two touchdowns on the ground for good measure and was hell-bent on completing a pass to every eligible man on the roster.

Mahomes' coach, Kliff Kingsbury, is going to give him every opportunity to succeed. Kingsbury called 71 passing plays against SFA -- 71! If Mahomes had played the entire game, he might have thrown for 770 yards. That is ridiculous.

The Red Raiders' next opponent is the Arizona State Sun Devils. They ranked 126th in the nation against the pass last season. They gave up 369 yards to a man named Cookus from NAU last week.

TCU and Oklahoma also gave up 300-plus yards passing.

The main knock on Texas Tech is that they won't win enough for Patrick to be considered for the Heisman. Only national champions win the Heisman.

WRONG.

If the Red Raiders win 10 games -- yes, 10 games -- Patrick Mahomes will at least be in New York for the Heisman ceremony. The last Red Raiders to be Heisman finalists? Michael Crabtree and Graham Harrell. They won 11 games.

The difference is, Mahomes is already receiving attention as a freak quarterback. Respected NFL scouts are touting him as a dark horse:

ESPN is putting out videos saying he's a top 5 quarterback.

Mahomes has another thing that Graham did not have. Coaching credibility.

I know, that sounds ridiculous. I know. Kliff is around .500 as a head coach. Mike Leach was awesome. Sure. Leach was great; he swung his sword and left a huge mark on Lubbock. For everything he accomplished, his offensive system has never produced a Heisman trophy winner.

Leach is looked at as a baffling human being who shouldn't be coaching, but it is so crazy it works. Kingsbury is looked at as a hotshot upstart quarterback whisperer.

In 2011, Kingsbury and his quarterback, Case Keenum, were snubbed as Heisman finalists.

In 2012, Kingsbury took some scrub named Johnny Manziel and turned him into Johnny Effing Football. The Aggies won 10 regular season games that year.

In 2013, Kingsbury turned two true freshmen into viable starting Big 12 quarterbacks long before they were ready to be.

In 2014, Kingsbury unleashed Patrick Mahomes as a true freshman.
