There will be a number of flights delayed or cancelled this afternoon at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport due to the primary Instrument Landing System (ILS) malfunctioning.

According to the City of Lubbock, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is responsible for the ILS and they are currently trying to repair the equipment. KFYO News has learned the ILS malfunctioned today around 12:30p.

With the dense fog across the South Plains and Panhandle today, the ILS is vitally important for planes landing at the airport.

The airport also has RNAV or area navigation system but not all air carriers use that technology and that's why the repair of the ISL needed.
