Some Lubbock Republicans will get together this weekend as part of the inaugural series of workshops focusing on different areas of politics.

The first Liberty Workshop series will be held on Saturday, April 27th at 10 a.m. in Mahon Library’s Community Meeting Room.

The group says that the Liberty Workshop series is designed to foster learning, debate, discussion, and voter engagement.

Saturday morning’s workshop will feature Dr. Benjamin Powell, the director of Texas Tech University’s Free Market Institute. In his presentation, Powell plans to address “the general decline of freedom in the United States and what that means for prosperity.” A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

Liberty Workshop organizer and Lubbock County Republican Party Precinct 15 Chairman Brian Thornton says that the workshops are not just for Republicans, but also to those across the political spectrum with diverse viewpoints.

“People who may generally agree with Republican policy positions are welcome and even encouraged to attend,” said Thornton. “As we struggle as a nation to overcome a weak economy and a decade of war, now is the time to come together as citizens and respectfully and thoughtfully resolve our differences."

The group plans for the Liberty Workshop series to be a monthly event.

The Liberty Workshop series will run from 10 a.m. until noon, and refreshments will be served. The Mahon Library is located at 1306 9th Street.
