Houston Police have uncovered an illegal immigrant stash house due to a botched extortion attempt.

Police spokesman Chris Hassig said that after a woman was smuggled across the border her family was to pay a fee for the travel. Instead, the smugglers demanded more cash and threatened to harm the woman if the family refused.

The family called police and reported a kidnapping.

When Houston police, alongside federal agents responded Thursday they found and detained at least 30 illegal immigrants at the house.

It is not known if any of the smugglers were caught, though one man was injured when he attacked a police officer in a bid to escape.

Officials are attempting to determine the identities and homelands of the illegal immigrants.
