Two Amarillo men pleaded guilty to drug charges Monday, September 28, after investigators discovered more than 80 pounds of liquid methamphetamine smuggled into the U.S. in an SUV gas tank.

Richard Madrigal, 42, and Damian Erik Alcala, 37, both of Amarillo, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and face 10 years to life in prison and a $10 million fine.

Law enforcement officials initially learned of an SUV registered in Chihuahua, Mexico, travelling to Amarillo laden with illegal drugs. According to the Department of Justice, Alcala was seen driving an SUV to a home in Amarillo on July 17, 2015, where he met with Madrigal.

Amarillo police conducted a search of the residence and found crystal methamphetamine and handguns in the house along with 84 pounds of liquid meth in the SUV’s gas tank.

A sentencing date had not been set at the time of posting.
