This is definitely the time of year that we significantly increase our intake of carbs, sugars and unhealthy fats and alcohol, which, as busy as we are, depletes our immune systems and makes our stomachs hurt. Is there a solution? Yes!

I talked with Robin Hawkins with United Supermarket families about how to enjoy the treats of the season, but still keep our bodies going strong.

"If your gut isn't happy, you feel bad all over," Hawkins said. So how do we keep our guts happy?

She suggested healthy green superfoods, which is a green powder you mix with milk, coconut milk, soy milk or almond milk. I actually prefer to mix mine with water.

Hawkins pointed out that the brand Amazing Greens offers flavors like Holiday Cookie, Pumpkin Spice and Chocolate Peppermint, which you can substitute for cocoa in recipes.

If you suffer from celiac disease, are gluten free and/or sugar free, these greens will help maintain balance in your gut by combining good ingredients like wheat grass, barley, broccoli, spirulina, chloryophyll and more.

Plus, they contain stevia as a sweetener, which is low on the glycemic index and won't feed a candida overgrowth.
