GOP strategist and MustReadTexas.com founder Matt Mackowiak joined Lubbock's First News on Monday to talk about Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan.

When asked if he was surprised by the Ryan selection from Mitt Romney, Mackowiak said, "It was. Maybe we misunderstood who Romney really is. For months we all expected a low-risk, low-reward play it safe choice like Portman or Pawlenty...I didn't expect Romney to be this courageous."

Mackowiak also said in the interview that the next 7-10 days that there will be a race to define Ryan by both sides with his budget plan which plans to balance the budget and the controversy over reforming Medicare.

The Ryan Budget, which passed the House of Representatives but not the Senate, had cuts of $6.2 trillion in spending over the next 10 years, according to ABC News.
