On the Monday edition of The Chad Hasty Show, GOP strategist and co-founder of MustReadTexas.com Matt Mackowiak talked with Chad Hasty about the latest going on nationally and statewide.

Gun control continues to be a hot topic in the Senate, particularly with the expanded background checks proposed by the Toomey-Manchin amendment. Mackowiak said the legislation would still need to pass the House, but with the increasing pressure from the Newtown families, it may have a chance of passing. However, he added there are still many questions over this gun control legislation that need to be answered that haven't been addressed yet.

"There's so many questions around the Manchin-Toomey amendment. Is there a gun registry? if not, how is it enforced? Why would it not have done anything to prevent Newtown or Aurora or Tuscon? Why does it not address mental health? Why does it not address improving the enforcement of existing background checks?"

Mackowiak said the Toomey-Manchin amendment would need 60 votes in order to pass.

Mackowiak also talked about Senator John Cornyn, and the speculation that he's becoming more conservative as of late thanks to freshman Senator Ted Cruz. He commented that Cornyn's always been conservative, it's just more people are starting to notice him. He also added that, even though Cornyn and Cruz have different senatorial styles, it's good to see them working together.
