Since 2001 Americans have seen the 5 level color codes when going to the airport or watching the news, but soon they will go away. Later today, DHS will announce the new changes and how the changes will effect you. I don't know about you, but I'm going to miss the alert system. (more after the jump)Okay, I won't really miss them. Like most Americans, I stopped paying attention to the alert level a long time ago. I think even the government stopped paying attention since the alert level has been stuck on the orange color since 2006.

All the color-coded system was good for was for late night comedies. No one really even knew what the different colors meant. We all knew green was good and red was bad, but what about the other colors? Oh if the color goes from orange to red... what exactly am I supposed to do?

I think it's a good thing that we are getting rid of this system and replacing it with a system that is more targeted and gives more specific directions. It will also be good not to have to hear the alert status announced in the airports. After dealing with the TSA, all TSA check points should be on red alert. Just incase they grope the wrong person.

In 2011, we need information not color-coded warnings. Information for specific areas will be what really helps. Just for fun though, before they turn out the lights on the color coded system... give us the green light please.
