Do you want to know a secret? In all the years I've lived in West Texas, I've only been inside Jones AT&T Stadium for one football game. It was a helluva game though, and James Hadnot was the star.

In 1979, I saw James Hadnot score a game-winning touchdown for Texas Tech. I can't even remember who the Red Raiders were playing; I just remember that Hadnot was a BIG deal.

Hadnot was a true athlete. He actually played tight-end for Texas Tech for two years before the coach switched him to running back, where he then led the Southwest conference in rushing for two years. Imagine that: a RUNNING BACK from Texas Tech leading a conference.

Hadnot went on to do four years with the Kansas City Chiefs. It's also kind of funny that Hadnot never switched to a running back number, instead playing with no. 86 (as if he'd be kicked back to his old position or something).

James Hadnot passed away Friday, reportedly right here in the Hub City. He was a heck of a highlight for the Red Raiders back when they had few to brag about. I don't know where Texas Tech stands on honoring folks like Hadnot, but I sure think he should be recognized one more time at this years home opener. This guy made a lot of memories for people like me.
