According to Terry County Sheriff Larry Gilbreath, former Brownfield Superintendent Jerry D. Jones died on Wednesday, October 28.

Jones' death was the result of what appears to be a freak accident that occurred while he was working on a water line in his barn.

The sheriff said Jones was working alone in a four-foot hole in the ground. And though it's not entirely clear what happened, he believes Jones may have crawled in to or fallen into the hole.

The cause of Jones' death has not yet been determined, but Gilbreath does not see any indication of foul play. In a statement to KMAC News, the Terry County Sheriff said: "He probably slid in [the hole] and couldn’t get out."
