Chris Winn takes the gloves off, Perry votes for Romney, and more in today's Morning Brief.

Here is your Morning Brief for the morning of May 17, 2012. Give us your feedback below and tune in to Lubbock’s First News with Chad Hasty for these and many more topics from 6-9 am.

Pool, Getty Images

1. President Obama’s Budget Defeated Again (link)

By now you’d think that President Obama would show a little leadership when it comes to the budget. At least you’d think he would be able to get someone to vote for his budget. You’d be wrong though. According to the Washington Times, Obama’s budget went down yesterday 99-0 in the U.S. Senate. The House rejected the budget 414-0 in March.

Not good for President Obama.

Democrats disputed that it was actually the president’s plan, arguing that the slim amendment didn’t actually match Mr. Obama’s budget document, which ran thousands of pages. But Republicans said they used all of the president’s numbers in the proposal, so it faithfully represented his plan.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican, even challenged Democrats to point out any errors in the numbers and he would correct them — a challenge no Democrats took up.

“A stunning development for the president of the United States in his fourth year in office,” Mr. Sessions said of the unanimous opposition.

The White House has held its proposal out as a “balanced approach” to beginning to rein in deficits. It calls for tax increases to begin to offset higher spending, and would begin to level off debt as a percentage of the economy by 2022. It would produce $6.4 trillion in new deficits over that time.

By contrast the chief Republican alternative from the House GOP would notch just $3.1 trillion in deficits, and three Senate Republican alternatives would all come in below $2 trillion.

2. Perry Votes for Romney (link)

Governor Rick Perry took advantage of what many Texans are taking advantage of, Early Voting. The Governor voted Wednesday in Austin and told reporters that he voted for Mitt Romney and believes that Romney will win in the General Election.

“On a scale of 10, show me as a 10,” Perry said. “We don’t really have an option here, if you’re a person who cares about the future of this country.”

Perry said he “absolutely” thought Romney would win.

“The election may be close, but it shouldn’t be,” he said.

Perry said Romney brings “private sector experience” to the table that Obama doesn’t have.

“He understands that government is not the answer to everything,” Perry said.

I voted earlier this week and I wonder how many protest votes there will be over Mitt Romney. Romney will win the primary of course, but it will be interesting to see if Texans send any kind of message.

3. Chris Winn Goes After Neugebauer

With just a couple of weeks left in the campaign, it appears as though Chris Winn has taken the gloves off in his primary fight with Rep. Randy Neugebauer. In a recent interview on Pratt on Texas, Winn set out to connect Neugebauer with the financial meltdown. Winn has produced letters that he says shows Neugebauer opposed the Bush Administration’s attempts at reforming the Government Sponsored Entities before the meltdown came. Winn also claimed that letters then show Neugebauer turning around and blaming the Administration for not doing more. Winn points to an article from the Wall Street Journal that named Neugebauer as a Fannie Mae Republican.

The gloves are off folks. Winn will appear on LFN today at 7:35am to discuss this and other topics.

4. What the End of the Bush Tax Cuts Could Mean (link)

Good information for all to have here.

You may think only individuals in the top two brackets will face higher federal income taxes if the Bush cuts go bye-bye as scheduled on Jan. 1, 2013. Not true. Unless Congress takes action and the president goes along (whoever that is), rates will go up for everyone — not just “the rich.” Specifically, the existing 10% bracket will go away, and the lowest “new” bracket will be 15%. The existing 25% bracket will be replaced by the “new” 28% bracket; the existing 28% bracket will be replaced by the new 31% bracket; the existing 33% bracket will be replaced by the 36% bracket; and the existing 35% bracket will be replaced by the 39.6% bracket.

Bottom line: We’ll all see higher taxes.

The Bush tax cuts included several provisions to ease the so-called marriage penalty. The penalty can cause a married couple to pay more in taxes than when they were single, which is nuts.

Right now, the bottom two tax brackets for married joint-filing couples are exactly twice as wide as for singles. This helps keep the marriage penalty from biting lower and middle-income couples. Starting next year, the joint-filer tax brackets will contract, causing higher tax bills for many folks.

Currently, the standard deduction for married joint-filing couples is double the amount for singles. Starting next year, the joint-filer standard deduction will fall back to about 167% of the amount for singles.

Bottom line: lots of lower and middle-income income couples will face higher tax bills due to a harsher marriage penalty.

And there is a lot more. Click on the link above to read it all and be informed.

5. Dumb Story of the Morning (link)

This guy has some issues.

A Muncie man’s visit to the Ball State University campus on Monday ended with his arrest.

Campus police reported they first saw a nervous-acting Michael Joseph Phipps, 29, 314 W. Ninth St., riding a green bicycle about 10:45 a.m., when he left the bike outside the student center, emerging a few minutes later with two soft drinks.

Questioned by police, Phipps told officers he was bound for Bracken Library for some studying, although he acknowledged he wasn’t a student and didn’t know what he was going to study.

About an hour later, an officer saw Phipps again, this time riding a red bicycle and carrying a submarine sandwich.

He allegedly admitted he had stolen both bicycles — one from an on-campus bike rack, the other from a West North Street porch, as well as his soft drinks and sandwiches from the food court in the student center.

He was being held in the Delaware County jail on Tuesday under a $5,000 bond, preliminarily charged with three counts of theft.

People coming together.

The acrid fumes Estell complained of also stemmed from plumbing issues, McDonald said.

Droves of helpers have come to her aid, Assistant City Manager Vicki Covey said.

“People just started volunteering,” Covey said. “Then one group told another group, and it just snowballed.

“Every group you talk to, somebody in the room — or more than one — had eaten there, used to eat there, wanted to eat there and never did. She’s legendary. And everybody wants to help. People have been very generous.”

The Texas Panhandle Builders Association Remodelors Council leapt into action after learning Estell sought help to stay in her house, Allen said.

“This project is going better than I could imagine,” Allen said. “When I ask, ‘Have you heard of Mama Ruby?’ They say, ‘What do you need?’”

On Friday, Remodelors Council Chairman Paul Davis, owner of Marble Depot, and past Chairman Winston Allen, owner of Overhead Builders, described the extensive renovations over a din of circular saws and hammers. For one thing, crews found the house had no insulation.

Estell on Monday confirmed friend Keith Grays’ story that she called 911 last winter “because I like to froze to death,” she said. “I got in the ambulance to stay warm. They got me warm and carried me to a friend of mine to stay.”

Two Texas officeholders have voiced their concerns regarding two federal agencies within the state.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples sent a letter to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, regarding their belief that the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are overreaching their regulatory authority.

They specifically cite the proposed Clean Water Act guidance document, which the duo says greatly expands the agencies’ regulatory authority, and will produce “overwhelming costs, regulatory uncertainty, and questionable public benefit.”

“The legally dubious significant nexus test adopted by the EPA and the Corps leaves it to field agents to determine, on a case-by-case basis, whether the federal government has authority to regulate a body of water,” the text reads.

“Committing to individual field agents the task of implementing such a nebulous standard grants too much authority to the unaccountable federal bureaucracy and threatens to expand the amount of land under federal regulation beyond what congress intended when it enacted the CWA.”

Dating is tough, and interpersonal communication can be even tougher. But the electronic age has brought with a whole new layer of angst — it seems nothing is more perplexing to a man than talking to a woman via text message.

A recent survey conducted by TSB Magazine, an online dating advice and men’s interest site, asked participants to review some of the most traditionally frustrating or confusing aspects of dating, approaching women, and romance, and then choose which issue was paramount.

Fully a third of men said confusion about when to send a text to a woman and what it should say was the most frustrating aspect of a budding romance, while others cited more traditional concerns like approaching women, having an in-person conversation and the awkwardness of an end-of-date kiss.

Of course, not everyone even had the chance to get that far — the survey also included the choices “having women see you are a friend, not a love interest” and “hitting it off with a woman only to have her shift her interest to someone else,” which garnered 10 percent and 6 percent of the votes, respectively.

There are many different elements within the workplace that can increase a person’s risk of depression, but a new study suggests that men and women are affected differently.

According to study researcher JianLi Wang, an associate professor of psychiatry and community health sciences at Canada’s University of Calgary, women had increased levels of depression when they felt like they weren’t appreciated at work or given adequate incentives for a job well done. Men appeared to be unaffected by these factors. Some 2,700 people were surveyed.

However, high levels of job strain seemed to increase the risk of depression among men working full-time, but not among women. In fact, 11 percent of men who worked full-time had an increased risk for depression if their job came with a high level of strain. This compared to a 1.5 percent increase in men whose jobs didn’t come with high job strain.

Women, on the other hand, had increased levels of depression while simply working 35-40 hours a week.

Researchers also found that conflicts between family and work affected the risk for depression in both sexes. The difference being that men were more affected when their family life got in the way of work, while women were more distressed when work obstructed their family life.

Professor Wang says,

Major depressive disorder has a significant impact on the health of employees, and affects job performance. Employers should monitor the magnitude of these factors, such as job strain, in order to prevent their full-blown negative effects.”

Researchers believe that these studies could assist in the advancement of strategies for employers to help avoid depression in their employees.

Cruz - Facebook

On Wednesday’s edition of Lubbock’s First News, U.S. senate candidate Ted Cruz spoke to Chad and Rex about the current state of his campaign.

Cruz said that his campaign has gained incredible momentum after receiving an “enormous” endorsement from Governor Sarah Palin. Cruz also re-iterated that voters are tired of establish moderates and career politicians, and that Texas needs a strong conservative in the Senate.

Cruz said that the Senate race has essentially come down to 2 candidates: himself and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst. Cruz called out Dewhurst for lying about him in several of Dewhurst’s political ads, and said that the attack ads by Dewhurst were nothing more than “smoke and mirrors.”

“What Dewhurst is trying to do is the same thing Obama is doing in Washington: distract the voters from his record and my record. I think what the voters want to hear and deserve to hear is a comparison of Dewhurst’s tax and spend record…and my record, standing and fighting for conservative principles.”

Cruz also gave his thoughts on the war in Afghanistan, the IRS, attorney general Eric Holder, and an “honest” endorsement from the Austin-American Statesman.

The day before we have the candidate on the show, you will be able to post your questions for the candidate right here on kfyo.com or on Facebook. Out of the questions asked by you the listeners, I will select a few to ask the candidate.

On Thursday’s edition of Lubbock’s First News we will visit with candidate for U.S. Congress in District 19, Chris Winn. Winn is the former Lubbock County GOP Chairman who threw his hat into the ring to challenge Randy Neugebauer. Winn has been riding the anti-incumbent wave and traveling throughout District 19 talking about his campaign. Winn blames has blamed all the incumbents in Washington for the mess the country is in and his hoping that anti-incumbent fever catches on here in District 19.

Winn will appear on LFN at 7:37am on 790AM KFYO. What would you ask him?

goldberg, Flickr

How hard is it to write appropriate test questions for a third grader?

A few weeks ago we had a teacher fired for assigning his students grossly morbid word problems. Now, we have this story out of New Jersey, where third graders were asked on a state exam to reveal a secret they had a hard time keeping.

The website NJ.com reports that one parent, Richard Goldberg of Marlboro, was appalled when he asked his 9-year-old twin sons about the exam and was told about the question, which required an essay. One of the boys wrote about breaking a ceiling fan and not telling his dad (presumably until now). The other wrote about the time Goldberg took them out of school on false pretenses for a day of skiing!

Approximately 4,000 students in New Jersey answered the question, which has since been pulled from the exam and will not be used on future exams. But seriously, this question never should have shown up on an exam in the first place. How do you suppose the administration would have reacted if a student revealed that they were molested, or witnessed a criminal act? This is a ridiculous, overly intrusive question that could have potentially opened up a huge can of worms for the administration to deal with.

This morning in my Morning Brief, I discussed whether or not the City of Lubbock was actually a conservative city. At first glance, the answer would be yes. Lubbock and the surrounding area elects some of the most conservative candidates to Washington, D.C. and to Austin. If you take a look at the City Council though, it may paint a different picture. Some would argue that if Jim Gerlt wins his runoff against Paul Beane, the Democrats could have a majority vote. If Lubbock really is that conservative, how did so many Democrats end up on the council? Tell us what you think in today’s Poll of the Day and go into detail below.

Has the left in Lubbock captured City Hall? Race War, and more in today's Morning Brief.

Here is your Morning Brief for the morning of May 16, 2012. Give us your feedback below and tune in to Lubbock’s First News with Chad Hasty for these and many more topics from 6-9 am.

jczart, Flickr

1. Is Lubbock Leaning Left?

If you were to go around and ask people if Lubbock was a conservative town or a liberal town, what do you think the answer would be from most people? Most would say that Lubbock is a very conservative city, but if you take a look at the make-up and the possible make-up of the Lubbock City Council, you might be surprised.

For the last few years, conservatives in Lubbock could count on Tom Martin, Paul Beane, Jim Gilbreath, and even Karen Gibson to make conservative votes on the council. Though there are some that still believe that Gibson is a moderate.

On the liberal side Victor Hernandez, Floyd Price, and on some issues Todd Klein have been on the same page. Though, I would consider Klein a populist.

Things however are about to change and could change dramatically on the council. The Democrats have added Latrelle Joy to their ranks, which gives the left three votes on the council. Todd Klein? Who knows where Klein will fall on an issue, but history shows that he isn’t afraid to spend money. Glen Robertson talks like a Republican, but has many on edge because he had so much support from Democrats in Lubbock.

Now we get to what could be the game changer in Lubbock. The runoff between Paul Beane and Jim Gerlt. Beane has been someone that Republican’s could count on for the most part on the City Council. Jim Gerlt is being backed by David Langston and other Democrats in town. There is no question that right now Jim Gerlt has all the momentum in the runoff. If Gerlt were to win, the Lubbock City Council could have at least 4 liberal votes, a majority.

As of right now, with the Beane/Gerlt race still undecided I would say that there is no strong conservative voice on the City Council. As of right now, I believe we could see a very liberal City Council emerge here in Lubbock. Even if Mayor-Elect Robertson stays on the right, he could be outnumbered by a Populist/Liberal “gang of 4 or 5″ that would include Hernandez, Price, Joy, Klein, and Gerlt (if he wins).

So is Lubbock a conservative city? Maybe, but your City Council sure isn’t.

Thoughts?

2. A Censored Race War? (link)

Thomas Sowell knocks it out of the park again. Sowell is dead on and really there is nothing to add. Here is part of his article:

When two white newspaper reporters for theVirginian-Pilot were driving through Norfolk, and were set upon and beaten by a mob of young blacks — beaten so badly that they had to take a week off from work — that might sound like news that should have been reported, at least by their own newspaper. But it wasn’t.

The O’Reilly Factor on Fox News Channel was the first major television program to report this incident. Yet this story is not just a Norfolk story, either in what happened or in how the media and the authorities have tried to sweep it under the rug.

Similar episodes of unprovoked violence by young black gangs against white people chosen at random on beaches, in shopping malls, or in other public places have occurred in Philadelphia, New York, Denver, Chicago, Cleveland, Washington, Los Angeles, and other places across the country. Both the authorities and the media tend to try to sweep these episodes under the rug.

Check out the rest of his article above.

3. NY Moving Fast to Criminalize Viewing Child Porn (link)

This has been an interesting story out of New York.

The New York State Senate on Tuesday passed legislation to make it a crime to view child pornography on the Internet, as lawmakers rushed to close a loophole opened by a state appeals court just a week earlier.

State law currently prohibits the possession and promotion of child pornography. But a May 8 ruling by the New York Court of Appeals held that viewing child pornography on the Internet without taking further action such as printing or saving files does not necessarily constitute possession.

The ruling caused an instant furor among state lawmakers, who are acting with unusual speed to pass corrective legislation.

The bill passed by the Senate on Tuesday would make it a felony to “knowingly access with intent to view any obscene performance which includes sexual conduct by a child less than sixteen years of age.”

“This legislation sends a strong message that watching child pornography for any reason is completely unacceptable,” Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos said in a statement.

4. Bush Backs Romney (link)

I’m not sure why this is news, but here you go:

“I’m for Mitt Romney,”Bush told ABC News as he was leaving by elevator after he gave a human rights speech in Washington.

This was a rare appearance in the nation’s capital for Bush, who has stayed out of politics since his presidency ended. His brief words on Romney are basically an endorsement of the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

Various members of the Bush family are supporting Romney, including Bush’s parents — former president George H.W. Bush and ex-first lady Barbara Bush — and his brother, former Florida governor Jeb Bush.

Again, not sure why this is news. I don’t think anyone expected Bush to endorse Obama.

5. Dumb Story of the Morning (link)

Give me Cocoa Puffs.

If you reach for the Special K with those little chocolatey chunks thinking it’s more healthful than a kid’s cereal, you may as well fill your bowl with Cocoa Puffs. The nutritional contents of both cereals are pretty similar. Cocoa Puffs are actually slightly lower in calories, fat, and sodium, though Special K wins in the protein department by 1 gram.A better bet: Get your chocolate fix from real chocolate. Go for the heart-healthy dark type. Just be sure to limit it to 1 ounce a day.

6. Good Brews Good News of the Day (link)

12 year old saves the day.

A 12-year-old boy is being credited with saving the lives of his four brothers and sisters ages 9, 6, 5 and 3.

It happened in Milton, Florida. Justin Jackson was watching his younger brothers and sister. His parents were both working when a fire broke out at their home in the 6600 block of Ridgecrest Drive. That’s when Justin sprung into action.

But doesn’t think of himself as brave. And certainly not heroic.

“I was just helping my family,” he said humbly.

On Sunday at 2am when he woke up to flames, his only thought was saving his four baby siblings.

“I knew the house was going to be gone. I knew we had to move,” said Justin Jackson.

“When I woke up, I just freaked out,” said 9-year-old Emilio Jackson.

After heavy storms knocked out power to their home Saturday night, Justin and his brothers fell asleep in the living room. His sister Brooklynn was asleep in her room. Thunder and lightening woke them up.

An Abilene High School student is this winner of this year’s 19th Congressional District Art Competition. Congressman Randy Neugebauer (R- Lubbock) made the announcement earlier today.

“I am happy to announce that Miss Beckie Schneller, a senior at Abilene High School, has won this year’s Congressional Art Competition for the 19th District of Texas. Her winning oil painting, entitled ‘So Small,’ clearly shows Beckie’s talent, and is representative of the kind of aptitude that exists in every part of our district. I always enjoy seeing it first-hand.

“Beckie’s painting will hang in the Cannon Tunnel for visitors from around the United States and the world to view as they walk toward the Capitol. I want to thank each student who submitted artwork, and I look forward to watching them continue to showcase their artistic talents in the future.”

The Congressional Art Competition has been held every year since 1982. According to the U.S. House, more than 650,000 high school students have participated since 1982.
