A man arrested in an extortion case that led to the shooting of an FBI agent last week in Crosbyton was arraigned Monday, November 2, in Lubbock federal court.

Shannon Smith (46) is being accused of extortion for threatening a Crosbyton resident with the kidnapping of his granddaughter, among other family members, if he was not given $525,000.

Smith would later be set up by law enforcement, baited to the drop spot in South Crosbyton for what he thought was the money transfer, but ultimately turned into his arrest.

Smith was not charged with the shooting of FBI agent Michael Orndorff that transpired during his arrest.

DPS said Orndorff was the victim of friendly fire, shot by an officer during an operation to arrest Smith.

The latest on Orndorff is that he is in in critical condition, but improving at UMC.
