On Wednesday's Lubbock's First News with Tom Collins and Laura Mac, Doctor Joey Young joined the show to talk about lawns as well as upcoming events in his department. Young is Assistant Professor of Turfgrass in the Department of Plant and Soil Science Texas Tech University.

On applying glyphosates (such as Roundup) to lawns in early Spring, Young said,

(I don't) recommend that people go out and apply glyphosate whenever the grass is starting to green up, because it is a systemic herbicide, and if the plant takes up the herbicide, there's a good chance that you could see some injury as the grass continues to come out of dormancy.

Dr. Young also provided information about the department's first annual trap and skeet shoot that will be held this coming Saturday at 9:00 a.m., as well as the third annual golf tournament which will be held on Friday, May 1st. Hole sponsorships for the 4-man scramble contest are available.
