Last week supporters of medicinal and recreational marijuana gathered at the Texas Capitol in an attempt to persuade lawmakers to change current laws.

According to the Dallas Morning News, supporters discussed what they see as benefits for medical marijuana and also the decriminalization of marijuana. Being arrested with 2 ounces of pot or less is a Class B misdemeanor which means someone could spend up to 180 days in jail or be fined $2,000. The Marijuana Policy Project has said their first priority is decriminalization.

The chances of any marijuana bill passing is slim, but Speaker Joe Straus did comment on the issue.

While legalization remains a vast longshot in Texas, House Speaker Joe Straus said he feels the discussion is becoming “more serious.”

“I’m not predicting that a bill will pass, but I do think there will be some consideration, when before it may have just been put off to the side,” the San Antonio Republican told government students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin last week.

Referring to medical uses of marijuana, Straus said: “It’s pretty moving when you talk to the parent of a child who thinks that laws are restricting the ability of a family to get help for their children.”

However, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has said he won’t support legislation to allow the medical or recreational use of marijuana. And Gov. Greg Abbott, according to a spokesman, “supports current drug laws and opposes the legalization of marijuana.”
