Do You Approve of the Actions Taken By The City of Lubbock Regarding the Lubbock Police Department? [POLL]

The Lubbock Police Department has been swept up in controversy lately. On Wednesday, Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson defended the Lubbock Police as well as the current investigation by the City. This is what the Mayor had to say about the controversy:

“Over the past month, questions, concerns, and allegations have been raised regarding the Lubbock Police Department and its handling of a high-profile murder case, the Department of Justice report, and the appointment of an interim chief.

The City Charter places the responsibility of supervising the police chief on the city manager. Last month, City Manager James Loomis informed City Council that he was demoting the current chief and appointing an interim chief. Mr. Loomis did not go into details about the changes but assured council members that he felt it was necessary and in the best interest of the city to do so. He also informed council members that there were serious allegations being made and that appropriate actions were being taken to determine the facts. Mr. Loomis said that as information became available, he would brief the City Council.

I have placed an executive session item on the next regular City Council meeting on July 23rd for the council to be briefed on the entire situation, have the ability to ask questions, and discuss the issues at length.

Due to the seriousness of the allegations, there will be very little information that can be shared with the public until the entire process is complete. I am asking that everyone give the process the necessary time to be completed.

I will not speculate on any rumored investigations or potential outcomes or do anything else that could jeopardize the investigation. I have been assured everything is being examined and that there are safeguards in place to ensure the integrity of any findings. Unfounded accusations and unreasonable demands will only muddy the water and slow the process down.

Now is the time for calm, professional action rather than political posturing and pandering. I have complete confidence that the truth will surface and, if necessary, corrective measures will be taken.

I stand with the Lubbock Police Department as we work through this entire process, and thank our fine police officers as they continue to keep Lubbock safe.”
