On February 12, Angela Davis will speak at Texas Tech about the prison system in the United States. She was invited to speak for the African American Month Lecture series that is hosted and paid for by the university. Texas Tech will pay Davis $12,000 to speak next Thursday.

Davis is a controversial on many levels and has drawn protests at many appearances. She was a leader of the Communist Party USA and was the Vice Presidential pick of the Communist Party twice here in the United States. In past interviews she says she still has a relationship with the party. Davis appeared on the FBI's Most Wanted list when she fled California and guns she purchased were used in the murder of a Judge. Davis has also called for an academic and economic boycott of Israel.

The Texas Tech College Republicans launched a petition yesterday against paying Davis $12,000 to speak on campus.
